In this episode, Dr. Wanda Wallace explains how to step out of your comfort zone and become an effective leader in today’s business world. In today’s “knowledge” economy organizations need lots of experts, from legal to risk to sales to IT.  However, contrary to popular myth, experts are not just individual contributors – they are also leaders of teams, leaders of managers, and leaders of large departments. They are followed because of their competence and detailed knowledge; they have credibility and a track record because of their expertise. But in order to take on larger responsibilities and lead effectively, expert leaders need to develop the ability to span across domains where they have little expertise. These leaders must learn to lead at times as the expert and at times as a non-expert – that is, as a spanner who can span across knowledge domains. The core challenge is how to balance the two approaches.

Tune in and hear Dr. Wallace’s thoughts on:

  • How to create leverage and delegate effectively
  • When to lean on expertise and when to lean on spanning
  • How to build, enable and add value to your team
  • How the expertise trap impacts the career growth for women and other minorities
  • And much, much more!
